The Sentencing Project Urges Congress to Rescind Funds for FCI Letcher

June 12, 2025

The Sentencing Project submitted testimony to the Senate Committee on Appropriate Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies urging Congress to rescind funding for a proposed fourth federal prison in rural Eastern Kentucky.

Related to: Federal Advocacy, Sentencing Reform

The Sentencing Project submitted testimony urging Congress to save half a billion dollars by rescinding unobligated funds for FCI Letcher, a consistent request with the recommendations of the Trump and Biden administrations. Building a prison in rural eastern Kentucky will worsen the staffing crisis already plaguing federal prisons and it would be near impossible for many family members to visit their loved ones in prison.
