On the Chopping Block: State Prison ClosingsA new report by The Sentencing Project documents -- for the first time-- the growing trend of states to close prisons. As a result, the number of prison beds may be reduced by more than 13,000 by yearend. The report, On the Chopping Block: State Prison Closings, notes that 13 states to date have closed or are considering closing their correctional facilities, reversing a 40-year trend of prison expansion.
