The Sentencing Project Responds to the Tragedy in Newtown

Along with the rest of the nation, we were shocked and deeply troubled by the recent shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.  While this incident invites us to take meaningful action to reduce the threat of gun violence, we should not respond by adopting policies that could make our communities less safe or lead to unnecessary involvement of youth in the criminal justice system.

The Sentencing Project is pleased that the Obama Administration has established a task force, led by Vice Presiden Biden, to reduce gun violence in our schools and communities.  We urge the Administration to support meaningful reforms that rely on sound, evidence-based research rather than panic-driven ideas.  You can read our recent letter to Vice President Biden by clicking here.
